Fund empowers New Zealanders to care for their environment

The Ministry for the Environment is now accepting applications to the Sustainable Management Fund for innovative projects that will benefit the environment.

The Sustainable Management Fund supports community groups, iwi, businesses and local government to take practical action that produces long-term environmental benefits.

Applicants can apply for a minimum of $10,000 to a maximum of $200,000 per financial year for projects starting on 1 July 2008. Funding is available for up to three years.

Chief Executive Hugh Logan says this is a great opportunity for groups to embark on environmentally beneficial projects that may not be possible without financial assistance.

"We encourage groups to apply and hope to see lots of exciting ideas in the upcoming funding round," said Mr Logan.

Proposals should be for practical projects that encourage proactive partnerships and promote community action. They must also directly support one or more of the following Ministry priorities.

* Encouraging sustainable households

* Sustainable land and water management

* Supporting sustainable business practices

* Meeting the challenges of climate change

The Sustainable Management Fund has been providing financial assistance to environmental projects for more than 11 years. The 2008 funding round opens today (11 October 2007) and closes on 22 January 2008.
