2007

The Alliance Party elected new leaders today at its National
Conference in Dunedin.

New positions elected are two co-leaders, Victor Billot and Kay Murray.

Mr Billot is an trade union official with the Maritime Union of New
Zealand.

Ms Murray is programme manager for a Dunedin charitable trust that
provides services for people with intellectual and physical
disabilities.

Other elected party positions filled include President (Paul Piesse),
General Secretary (Tom Dowie), Policy Co-ordinators (Matthew Stephen
and Sarah Campbell) and Treasurer (Kay Murray).

Mr Billot says the Conference had been a positive one that brought
together 30 delegates from around New Zealand.

He says the party is committed to running both a party list and
electorate candidates in the 2008 general election.

"We will be the only party advocating policies for the public good
including affordable housing, secure well paid jobs, free education
and quality public health care."

He says a well-attended public session with conference guest and
political author Chris Trotter on Saturday had attracted substantial
public interest.

In addition the Alliance had adopted a new constitution, updated
policy for its 2008 manifesto, and discussed strategies for raising
its profile. The Conference closes this afternoon.
