Scouts Condemn Medals Theft
03 December 2007
Scouting New Zealand is adding its voice to the chorus of condemnation of thieves who stole a number of service medals, including Victoria Crosses, from the Waiouru Army Museum over the weekend.
Chris Hooper, CEO of Scouting New Zealand, commented, “These medals are an acknowledgement of outstanding individual bravery and self-sacrifice and represent the actions of New Zealanders under extreme conditions. Those to whom they were awarded are rightly regarded by the nation as heroes. They served this country honestly and well and their military medals are a testament to that. These medals are not conferred simply as a commemoration. They have been earned at great cost and their loss is a tragedy.”
Scouts are involved each year in supporting the RSA at ANZAC Day Commemorations throughout New Zealand.
