Next Saturday, much loved children’s author Joy Cowley and celebrated actor and broadcaster Dame Kate Harcourt will join forces to launch New Zealand’s National Children’s Day.

On Saturday 1 March they will be holding a public Children’s Story Time at Capital E to share their favourite children’s stories with the children of Wellington. They will be supported in their story telling journey by Wellington Deputy-Mayor, Ian McKinnon, Wellington Central MP, Hon Marion Hobbs and National List MP, Mark Blumsky.

Joy will be reading classics from her own work including Nicketty-Nacketty-Noo-Noo-Noo and The Fierce Little Woman and the Wicked Pirate. Kate will be reading classic New Zealand stories including The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate by Margaret Mahy.

“Children’s Day is a time for all families to enjoy being with each other at the hundreds of fun free or low cost family events throughout the country. I couldn’t think of a better way to launch it than to share the wonder of stories with the children of Wellington” says Joy Cowley.

New Zealand’s National Children’s Day is held annually and will be celebrated on Sunday 2 March 2008. Hundreds of family-focussed events are organised by community organisations and government departments throughout the country. Child, Youth and Family is the implementation agency for Children’s Day and works with key non-government organisations including Rotary, Barnardos, Save the Children and the Children’s Commissioner to undertake the event each year.
