Lord Ashdown welcomes launch of New Zealand Liberals

12 March 2008, Norton-sub-Hamdon, Somerset, England—Lord Ashdown the former leader of the British Liberal Democrats and European Union High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina today welcomed the launch of the New Zealand Liberal Party.

“The addition of a liberal democrat party in the centre of the political spectrum will only strengthen a modern democracy.” Paddy Ashdown said from his home in Somerset, England.

“The New Zealand Liberals have published a draft Constitution for New Zealand."

Lord Ashdown added. “While it’s not for me to comment on the domestic institutions of New Zealand, anything that endeavours to make the institution of government more transparent, more accessible and more accountable is worthy of serious consideration. As I believe this draft Constitution is."

“The New Zealand Liberal Party has set itself high standards in its Charter.” Lord Ashdown said.

“And imbedding a covenant between ethnic peoples into a Constitution is a noble ideal. Time will tell whether they can turn it into political reality."

“I wish the New Zealand Liberals the very best in their undertaking.” Lord Ashdown concluded.
