Press Release Solar Water Heating –

Response to Announcement of the National Party Solar Policy

The Solar Industries Association welcomes the possibility of increased support for solar water heating as announced by the Hon Dr Nick Smith MP,
National Party Climate Change Spokesman today.

Mr Brian Cox, Executive Officer of the Association said that the industry was now well placed to support an increase in demand for solar water heating systems. “The industry has a well established scheme for accreditation for Supply and Installation of Solar Water Heating Systems. This is based on independently verified evidence that suppliers and installers are suitably trained and experienced to install solar systems to best practice. There will soon be 30 networks of Suppliers (each with their own different design of system) with over 300 Approved Installers who can easily manage the increase in installations envisaged by Dr Smith. This is also a very competitive market that will give purchasers good choice of different systems to meet their specific application.”

Mr Cox said that the industry had been working on ensuring that the industry had quality products and installation practices so that solar water heating could be ideally on every house. Solar energy was also very appropriate for commercial applications where large volumes of hot water are used eg hotels, motels and restaurants. Over the last year the members of the industry had assisted revision of the technical standards for product and standards for best practice installation. “This puts the industry now in a position where we should all be considering using free solar energy to heat our hot water”
