Zapatistas in Wellington: Movie Night

Zapatistas in Wellington: Movie Night

The Wellington Zapatista Support Group is screening films once a month to raise awareness of the plight of indigenous peoples of Mexico. The first film Un poquito de tanta verdad (A little bit of so much truth) is a documentary about the repression inflicted by the Mexican Government on its own people.

The documentary was filmed during the popular uprising in the state of Oaxaca in 2006. Thousands of teachers, housewives, health workers, farmers and students occupied 14 commercial radio stations and one television station in order to organise their struggle for social, cultural, and economic justice.

Come see a truly inspiring and heart-warming film about the power of the people who struggle to overcome state oppression. Admission to the screening will be by koha. A brief outline of the Zapatista resistance will be provided before the movie.

The proceeds from this fundraising event will go to providing capacity-building workshops for health promoters in autonomous Zapatista communities the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, one of the poorest in the country.

Unlike many indigenous communities reduced to accepting government hand-outs, the Zapatistas are committed to the peaceful development and provision of their own health, education and justice services, using members of their own communities speaking their own indigenous languages. This requires training in several technical areas.

The Wellington Zapatista Support Group is assisting the Caracol of La Garrucha in the health sector with this important and essential work, by raising funds to enable capacity-building workshops for the 50 health promoters of this zone.
