EFA poses security risk for campaign truck

14 May 2008. Family Party leader Richard Lewis says putting a private address on his campaign truck poses a security issue for his authorising agent and is reluctant to take the risk.

The bright yellow V10 2005 Dodge Ram is branded with the Family Party logo and the catch phrase “no dodgy politics” and has been a hit with locals out and about in South Auckland. But the vehicle shares the same colours as South Auckland’s ‘Killer Beez,’ which Mr Lewis says makes the vehicle a potential target.

“Our colours unfortunately are similar to those of a prominent South Auckland gang and a truck like this I am sure would be a worthy trophy for young prospects. So I’d prefer not to jeopardise the safety of my authorising agent by advertising her home address on the side of the vehicle,” says Mr Lewis.

He says the reasonable alternative would be to attach the party postal address and having received an email from the Justice Department today, will seek further guidance from the Electoral Commission on the matter.

“Due to the current petrol prices it spends more time in the garage than on the road anyway so I don’t think it’s such a big deal,” he added.
