Subject: icount – the solution to the political party sham

Life for New Zealanders won’t get better without immediate change to New Zealand party politics. In the run up to the 2008 election, New Zealand political party ‘icount’ offers a solution. ”New Zealanders are voting on election promises that are not being kept, and they have no way of holding politicians and political parties to account. Also, voters are unable to progress issues that require urgent government attention. A good example of this is the increase in petrol prices hurting New Zealand families”, says Paul O’Connor, icount Party President.

O’Connor believes the failure of party politics is largely due to politicians. “This is repeatedly shown by poor behaviour, and a belief that whatever one party supports, must be refuted by the others, even when the idea is for the common good of all New Zealanders. How can New Zealand keep pace with first world countries when our MP’s are only concerned with one-upmanship? They are privileged, well paid and the New Zealand public deserves better. No attention has been given to real election issues and promises, such as tougher sentencing, increasing police numbers and tax cuts. Instead the focus has been on point scoring and pushing through laws such as the electoral finance act, anti-smacking and MP pay increases."
