Customs seizes $3.9 million worth of Ice

New Zealand Customs Service officers at Auckland airport have seized almost 4kg of Ice (crystal methamphetamine).

The haul, made early last month, has an estimated street value of $3.9 million. It is the second million-dollars-plus seizure of crystal methamphetamine at Auckland airport this year. Other seizures of crystal meth and Contac NT (a component used to manufacture Ice) have been made in cargo and international mail.

A male and female travelling on a flight from Hong Kong were found to be body packing the crystal methamphetamine.

After conducting a personal search the male was found to have approximately 2.5kg and the female 1.5kg concealed under their clothing.

Customs Group Manager Investigations, Paul Campbell said it was a great result for the officers at Auckland Airport and for the intelligence gathering work Customs does behind the scenes.

"For our officers, making class A drug seizures represents a really positive result in terms of preventing harm in the community.

"And now, with the recently announced Drug Harm Index, the contributions made by Customs officers will be able to be more effectively measured," he said.

Both people have been charged in connection to the importation.
