EECA congratulates biofuel powered Earthrace

The Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) today congratulated Earthrace and skipper Pete Bethune on being the fastest boat to circumnavigate the globe. The boat was powered by biodiesel.

Elizabeth Yeaman, Team Manager, Renewables and Energy Supply, says Earthrace has helped raised the profile of renewable biofuels.

“Here in New Zealand we are only just beginning to use biofuels but they have been used in many places around the world for more than 20 years,” she says.

“The Earthrace has shown that you can achieve amazing results without negatively impacting on the environment.”

Elizabeth Yeaman says that every New Zealander can make a difference by switching to biofuel-blends when they can.

“Using sustainable biofuels can significantly reduce carbon emissions,” she says. “The New Zealand government is developing sustainability requirements for biofuels to ensure that all biofuels available in New Zealand are sustainably produced.”
