Review of Sale and Supply of Liquor Regulations

Media Release Rt Hon Sir Geoffrey Palmer
President
Law Commission

Wednesday 6 August 2008

Comprehensive Review of Regulatory Framework for the
Sale and Supply of Liquor

“The Law Commission welcomes the reference from the Government on the Sale of Liquor Act”, the President of the Law Commission Sir Geoffrey Palmer said today.

“The nature of this project is consistent with the established view that the Law Commission should be given projects that cross the boundaries of several portfolios and involve a significant degree of public consultation”.

“This project certainly meets that criterion as there are more than a dozen departments with a serious interest in liquor issues.”

“As Sir Ivor Richardson, the Retired President of the Court of Appeal once said, the Law Commission ‘is the statutory equivalent of a semi-permanent Royal Commission with a roving function …’.”

“The Law Commission will conduct this review with vigour and energy.”

“It will start immediately. There will be widespread public consultation with all the interested groups and special procedures will be set up to facilitate this.”

The Commission will also recruit some specialised staff to assist with this project.”

“I will enjoy leading this project. In a previous life I was the Minister of Justice and in charge of the Sale of Liquor Act 1989 and the policy process that led to it.”
