Kiwis get voting for Obama

Helen Clark and John Key are not the only political leaders up for election this year, as far as some New Zealand residents are concerned. Fifteen thousand Americans live in New Zealand. Most can vote in the US Presidential election, but may not know that. All Kiwis are urged to pass on this information to their American friends and coworkers.

There will be a non-partisan Voter Registration event this weekend, the 15th and 16th of September, at Mexicali Fresh Restaurant on Prince’s Wharf in Auckland’s CBD. Tables and registration aides, including computer links to www.VoteFromAbroad.org, will be available on Saturday and Sunday between 1-3 pm.

According to volunteer organiser Cindy Buell “Because voter registrations have to be mailed to the US for citizens to be sent absentee ballots, it’s critical that all Americans register this next week, before 20 September. Overseas voters can be tie-breaking votes in some races: they have determined certain US elections*. If only 534 more people had voted in New Mexico in 2000, Al Gore would have won the presidency.”

Americans are also urged to go to www.VoteFromAbroad.org to register themselves by 20 September or visit www.DemocratsAbroad.org for details on more events in Auckland.
