Helen Clark ups the ante, lifts her game, Key relates better but needs more contrast says leading NZ stylist

Helen Clark has upped the ante and lifted her game while John Key relates better but needs to vary what he wears, leading New Zealand stylist Stephanie Rumble said today.

Rumble says she is impressed with Clark’s campaign photo and her improved presentation since the start of the campaign.

``She is paying more attention to her hair and her clothing is structured and looking a lot more stylish. She has diversified in her choice of designers and the look is fresh. Helen is wearing more clothing with detail and interest.

``She is also out with a smile more at present although I am sure she doesn’t feel like it with the polls as they are. Despite her best efforts I think New Zealanders are ready for a change and no amount of airbrushing and toothpaste smiles are going to do that this time unless something dramatic happens.’’

Key has not changed his appearance much as the campaign winds up. However he has been consistently polished and sharp unlike Helen Clark who has really lifted her game with November 8 looming, Rumble said.

``He is staying very conservative and keeping to the blue ties and white shirts. John is working hard right now to appeal to the masses – his win of the political debate on TV1’s 90 minutes on October 15 was a good example of this. He has worked hard to make his language and presentation relatable. He has a long to go though as many of the die hard labour supporters describe him as untrustworthy. This is not reflected in his appearance however. I would still like to see some more contrast in the appearance. There is a lot you can do with blue.’’

Of the supporting cast, Michael Cullen is looking the same as always and Gerry Brownlee has a nice smile in his campaign photos.

``Rodney Hide is all smiles and he still has the yellow jacket out on the campaign trail. But he has got smart and the colour is infinitely more flattering than it was, but still hideous. He is getting attention and I suppose that is what he wants.’’

She said Bill English had the same shirt and ties, towing the party line. She wanted to see English show more style and finesse.

Rumble has a masters degree in clothing and textiles, has worked part-time as a fashion model for 15 years and has been a group exercise fitness instructor for the same amount of time. Her Flair Image style business has blossomed after being judged the best dressed woman in 2006 during Christchurch’s Cup Week.
