Oxfam New Zealand Launches Emergency Gaza Appeal

Oxfam New Zealand Launches Emergency Gaza Appeal

For immediate release Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Oxfam New Zealand has today launched an emergency appeal for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza that has now claimed more than 900 lives, almost 300 of which are estimated to be children.

There is a severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Continuing conflict makes the environment highly unsafe for civilians and aid workers. Hospitals in Gaza are on the brink of collapse.

Oxfam and its local partners are providing direct relief. There is an immediate need for food, blankets, plastic sheeting to cover windows, and medical supplies. Oxfam will also need support to repair sewage systems and infrastructure and rebuild livelihoods once the conflict ends.
Oxfam is calling on both sides of the conflict to cease fire immediately so the international agency can provide urgent assistance to Gaza's 1.5 million residents.

"What is the international community waiting for, to see even more dismembered people, and families erased before they act? Time is ticking by and the numbers of dead and injured are increasing," Oxfam's Mohammed Ali says from Gaza City.

Israel and Hamas have both ignored a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.

“Humanitarian assistance will not solve the long term problems in Gaza, but nor will bombs and rockets. A negotiated ceasefire is urgently needed,” Oxfam New Zealand’s policy advisor, Marianne Elliott says.

“Oxfam has been calling for action from governments around the world, pressing for protection of civilians, respect for human rights and observance of humanitarian law. In the meantime, we must do whatever we can to protect the innocent people caught in the crossfire.”

Oxfam has been funding partner organisations working in Gaza on various much-needed projects, including emergency medical services, assistance for displaced families, food and clean water.

The vast majority of people in Gaza have been struggling to feed their families since the conflict began on December 27. Prior to the current conflict, 80 percent of the territory’s population was already reliant on food distribution from UN and international organisations.

Oxfam has already committed $50,000 to the crisis and has today launched a public appeal for further funds.
