Waikato-Tainui restructure plan not endorsed

Waikato-Tainui has not endorsed a plan to restructure the wider tribal group.

The plan was put to the tribal Parliament, Te Kauhanganui, by its executive body, Te Arataura, at a special meeting on Saturday. (17 January 2008) Te Arataura Chairman, Tukoroirangi Morgan, said the executive presented a plan and new structure it believed would carry the tribe forward.

“However, a majority of Te Kauhanganui members felt that they needed more information and time to consider such a proposal.

“We as an executive were confident that we were on the right track, but the people have spoken so we have more work to do,” Mr Morgan said.

Significant social and cultural priorities were identified in the tribe’s strategic plan, Whakatupuranga 2050, which was released in 2007.

“The reasons for restructuring have not gone away, and if anything are even more pressing in the current economic climate and with new responsibilities as a result of the Waikato River settlement.”

Te Kauhanganui Chairman, Tom Roa, said he supports restructuring of the organisation as there are always efficiencies and improvements to be made.

“The parliament recognises that a restructuring is necessary and supports an appropriate proposal being advanced in due course,” Mr Roa said.

Both Mr Morgan and Mr Roa said they welcomed Te Kauhanganui addressing the issues put before it
