Child-friendly cities expert visits New Zealand
Wellington 19 March 2009. -- An international expert on child-friendly cities is in New Zealand 18-24 March to talk about how cities can be made better for children.
Dr Christoph Baker is with UNICEF Italy where he heads the international Child Friendly Cities Initiative.
Dr Baker will give a keynote address at the NZ Community Boards' Conference in Christchurch (19-21 March) on the role of community boards in developing child and youth-friendly communities. He will also lead a number of workshops around the same theme.
Dr Baker will also be talking to councils and community organisations in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch about how NZ cities can learn from the Child Friendly Cities Initiative. The aim is to give more significance to children's rights and needs in the development of local government policy and the urban environment.
Also at the conference, a joint UNICEF-Office of the Children's Commissioner report on child impact assessments in Auckland will be released (20 March) and a UNICEF Best Practice Award presented (19 March) to the Community Board project that best involves working with children in the community.
