Lack Of Integrity Becoming Tiresome

Libertarianz leader Richard McGrath said today he is getting dizzy trying to keep up with all the policy U-turns by New Zealand’s mainstream political parties. Firstly, Phil Goff trying to have it both ways with the anti-smacking law – which his government passed, and for which he himself voted – followed by his backpedaling on the seabed and foreshore issue; and now, Bill English’s announcement that National will break its promise to reduce income theft.

“How can we trust our politicians when they keep changing their tune every five minutes?” he asked. “What these people and their parties lack is the consistency to act according to set principles, and to keep election promises. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, National and Labour are like a box of chocolates – you don’t know what you’re going to get.”

Dr McGrath said his party still bases all their policies on their original list of principles, which were drawn up in 1996 and have not changed since that time.

“We believe in small government, the rule of law, very low taxation, individual freedom, personal responsibility and the system of free-market capitalism. We have stood resolutely by those principles, and always will. We regard any compromise on these principles as a betrayal, and view the mixed economy – whereby state over-regulation is imposed on the system of free trade – as akin to mixing sewage into a town’s water supply.”

“Bill English knew the economic downturn was underway when his party pledged to reduce personal taxation,” added Dr McGrath. “He is now playing true to form, and the National Party is reverting to its old self – Labour-lite. There is, however, still time for it to grow a spine and start acting according to its stated values – some of which the Libertarianz Party supports.”
