Workers' Party expells student leader

Workers' Party expells student leader

Jasmine Freemantle, President of the Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association (VUWSA) has been expelled from the Workers' Party.

The Workers' Party claim this expulsion is punishment for refusing to run VUWSA according to the wishes of the Party.

Freemantle has been a member of the Workers' Party since 2002, and was the longest serving member of the Party's Wellington branch.

Freemantle stood as the Party's candidate in the Mana electorate in 2005, and as a list candidate in the 2008 general election.

This is the first expulsion of a member from the Workers' Party.

Freemantle intends to contest the expulsion at the Workers' Party annual conference, to be held in Wellington over Queen's Birthday weekend.
