Tamils' vigil 18 may 2009 Aotea Square

Over 5,000 innocent Tamils killed and 25, 000 are injured by the Sri Lankan Government in the last 48 hours Sri Lankan Government is using heavy weapons (including white phosphorous and cluster bombs) on the innocent Tamil people World is watching on without stopping this attacks

Tamil Youth Organisation (New Zealand) is organising a vigil on Aotea Square, Queen Street, Auckland CBD on Monday 18th May 2009 from 2:00pm till 7:00pm, to request the New Zealand Government to put pressure to stop this Tamil Genocide by the Sri Lankan Government

As Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, celebrates the so called ‘end of war’ as a ‘National Holiday” with fireworks, the Tamils living in Colombo are scared to step on the streets as, in past they have been attacked and murdered by the Sinhala thugs following small victories of Sri Lankan Army against Tamils. On the other hand, In Vanni the war still continues to massacre thousands of lives. The Sri Lankan Government is claiming that all the civilians have been evacuated from the conflict zone but the LTTE. That way the Genocide of civilians under the name of ‘LTTE’ will not be blamed on Sri Lankan Government. 50,000 Tamil people are trapped in less than 2 square kilometer area which is under continuous attack by the Sri Lankan Army using heavy and illegal weapons (such as cluster white phosphorous bomb).

People in this area are living in makeshift camps with minimal or no food and clean water.

People are living inside the bunkers; not being able to come out even to feed their children as the shelling and bombing continues without interval. The Sri Lankan Government is not allowing media or NGOs to enter The New Zealand government and many other international governments, UN and NGO’s have called for an immediate ceasefire, which has been ignored by the Sri Lankan Government. Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have also called for an immediate ceasefire to save the innocent lives, which has been ignored by the Sri Lankan Government.

Tamil community is holding this vigil to request: - ICRC to step in immediately and rescue the trapped and injured civilians to safety! - New Zealand government to demand the United Nation to take immediate action to ensure the safety of the trapped civilians.

Date: Monday, 18th May 2009 Time: 2:00pm – 7:00pm Place: Aotea Square, Queen Street, Auckland CBD
