International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking

The Maori Wardens are hosting and bringing together the community to support the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking on the 26th of June, at the Maori Wardens Association, 10 Pikiway, Otahuhu, from 10am to 4pm. There will be a powhiri (welcoming) at 9:30am.

The event is to give participants the opportunity to exchange views on drug issues. What solutions do they have and how can each service complement each other. These are just some of the forums the groups will be taking part in.

Some of the groups taking part are the Maori Wardens from Mangere, Manurewa, Manukau, Otara, the First Step Drug Education, Victory Outreach, Maungarei Cadet Unit, Settlement Support Pacific, Tongan Community Otahuhu, Budgeting Services, Manukau Police, Youth and Child Support Mangere, Truth an Honesty Trust, Thames, Neighbourhood Support, Auckland and the Church of Scientology sponsored Drug-Free Ambassadors.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) set aside a day to recognize the importance of the problem of illicit drug use on an international scale to help raise awareness of what this does to individuals, families and whole communities around the world. There is an estimated 200 million users of illicit drugs throughout the world. The campaign is to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society and some of the solutions that are available.
