Ngati Kahungunu: 'Foreshore and Seabed Act’

MEDIA RELEASE

'Foreshore and Seabed Act’

3 June 2009

“Hon. Dr. Pita Sharples has done Ngati Kahungunu proud with his contributions to the Review of the Foreshore and Seabed Act”, says Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Chairman, Ngahiwi Tomoana, speaking from Darwin yesterday. Mr Tomoana said, “The recommendation to repeal the Act gives Parliament an opportunity to undo bad legislation” … “This will help build the Crown - Rangatira relationships at a time when Maori need to be reassured that the government is honouring its Treaty obligations”.

The recommendation that new legislation be developed together provides a forum for the Crown and Rangatira to engage. “The Treaty always envisaged a shared vision for Aotearoa and this forum is much needed to honour the Treaty relationship”, said Mr Tomoana.

Mr Tomoana is pleased with the outcome and congratulates the Review panel for providing solutions that will help protect Kahungunu rights and the rights of all New Zealanders.

The Hikoi that made this a defining issue in the Treaty relationship began in Kahungunu. It is fitting that our Rangatira Pita, is part of the Government that undoes the existing legislation.

Ngati Kahungunu also pays tribute to Tariana Turia and her whanau. “She had the courage to challenge Parliament to front up to their Treaty obligations” said Mr Tomoana. Her courage led to the Maori Party and the Maori Party is the only reason the legislation has been reviewed.

“To Hone Harawira, Te Ururoa Flavell, Rahui Katene and their whanau, hapu and iwi, thank you for your leadership in Parliament... Kia kaha tonu” said Mr Tomoana.

The challenge now is for government to adopt the recommendations to protect the rights of all New Zealanders and Tangata Whenua rights. Does government have the courage to work with our Rangatira to develop the legislation?
