Helping Her See A Way Out

Women’s Refuge launches its 2009 Annual Appeal on Monday 20 July, with the roll out of an attention-grabbing new advertising campaign.

Chief Executive, Heather Henare, says people will be riveted by the Saatchi and Saatchi-designed campaign. “Our television advertisement is stunning,” she said “And carries a strong message that we hope will stop people in their tracks. We are indebted to Saatchi and Saatchi and the creative team who have contributed their time and talent to this campaign.”

Ms Henare says, “This year we want to encourage New Zealanders to think about the hidden nature of domestic violence. So many people are still reluctant to accept that domestic violence is happening in their neighbourhood, family or within their group of friends, but believe me, it is happening.”

“In our refuges we do see just how bad it can get, but most people will not realise what is going on behind closed doors in many homes. We hope they will see that domestic violence is very real, but also that there is hope.”

“Although much of our work is never seen, Women’s Refuge is helping thousands of women and children every year. In refuges throughout the country, from Kaitaia to Invercargill, our workers and volunteers are knowledgeable, innovative and progressive. They are a vital and indispensable community presence, engaging with a wide range of other organisations.”

“In our Annual Appeal campaign this year, we hope to provide a glimpse into the extraordinary work of our Women’s Advocates, who provide such amazing support to the women who come to us for help.”

Ms Henare says, “Times are tough at the moment and our refuges are really seeing the effects of the recession. We need a big community response this year so that we can continue helping women to see a way out.”
