Polytechnic CEO Welcomes Youth Scheme

Responding to the Youth Opportunities Scheme announced by the PM yesterday Chief Executive of Whitireia Community Polytechnic, Don Campbell, said he welcomed the initiative which was seeking to address the needs of an important group in our society, 16/17 year olds who had left school but were not in work or training.

“We work closely with our community and region which is clearly feeling the effects of the recession and any additional government support to address this for our community is obviously very welcome.  We have yet to see detailed information about the initiative but believe it will seek to provide skills in identified areas along with appropriate support in language, literacy and numeracy and will seek to encourage Maori and Pacific students.  These are all features of our community and things we at Whitireia do particularly well already.”

“We discussed this at a meeting of Porirua and Kapiti secondary school Principals at Whitireia today with some very useful ideas coming forward.”

Whitireia Community Polytechnic has been very active in ‘school transition’ age groups. Over 2000 secondary school students attend industry skills programmes there in 2009, inside their school curriculum.
