New recruits ready to reduce reoffending
Two new recruits destined
for Spring Hill Corrections Facility today graduated from
their six week live-in training course and are now ready to
join the frontline of community safety.
Even in times of recession, exciting and challenging job opportunities still await motivated individuals at the Department of Corrections. Managing offenders in prison is not only vital service - keeping the public safe - but helping prisoners make more positive choices and reduce reoffending makes it a rewarding career.
The new staff will be warmly welcomed by the close knit team at the prison says Acting Prison Manager Eric Fairbairn.
“To be a corrections officer you need to have good people skills and a ‘can do’ attitude. You also need to be a true professional to work with some pretty manipulative people. This is an interesting and varied role and no two days are the same working inside.”
“Corrections officers are responsible for ensuring prisoners are safely, securely and humanely contained during their sentence and they actively work with prisoners to make positive changes to their behaviour.
“This is also a position that offers a clear career path for motivated professionals. We have a number of prison managers around the country who have worked their way up from the floor.”
Corrections officers receive full training and support with a six week initial training course and on the job training to ensure they are confident in their position. All custodial staff must complete the training at the Staff College at Rimutaka Prison.
