Early Intervention Can Save Children’s Lives, Says Refuge
Women’s Refuge says yesterday’s announcement by the government of its intention to launch a First Response trial in Auckland is a positive step towards addressing the family violence crisis in New Zealand.
Heather Henare, Chief Executive of the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges said, “It is well recognised that providing support to mothers who have experienced domestic abuse is critical to ensuring the safety of their children.”
“Women’s Refuge has significant experience in working closely with Police and in most areas already provides advocate support for women and children after domestic violence incidents.”
Ms Henare said, “Women’s Refuge has long-recognised the importance of following-up on low-level incidents of family violence. An intervention at this point can save lives.”
“We are pleased that the government is showing it wants to engage with NGOs. We believe organisations like Women’s Refuge, bring a huge amount of valuable experience and analysis to the table.”
“Our community presence and relationships with other agencies are well-established. It makes sense to consult with and support the organisations who are already doing the work.”
Ms Henare said, “The Hamilton Abuse Intervention Project, developed by Te Whakaruruhau Refuge, sees Women’s Refuge advocates accompany Police to every family violence call-out. This project is highly regarded, but is currently in jeopardy due to serious underfunding.”
Women’s Refuge is New Zealand’s most significant family violence organisation, with a 35 year history of providing comprehensive services for women and children
