EECA welcomes biodiesel move in tourism sector
The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) welcomed the biodiesel supply agreement announced today between Environ Fuels Ltd and Explore NZ.
Elizabeth Yeaman, Team Manager, Renewables and Energy Supply, said it was good news for the tourism industry with Explore NZ choosing to use a fuel that is better for the environment.
The B20 fuel which is a blend of 20% biodiesel with mineral diesel will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions compared with using straight mineral diesel.
EECA administers the Government’s BiodieselGrants Scheme. Elizabeth Yeamansaid it was pleasing to see this development as a result of the Scheme.
“It is great to see that New Zealandbusinesses are starting to see the benefits of using sustainable biofuels. New Zealandhas some real potential to see biofuel blends in mainstream use”.
“There is no one silver bullet for reducing the emissions from our transport sector but using biofuel blends is a part of the bigger picture and is a step in the right direction”.
The biodiesel supplied under this
agreement comes from a sustainable source, produced in New
Zealandusing local feedstocks.
“This means that the biodiesel does not compete with food production, does not come from rainforest areas or other environmentally important land and significantly reduces overall carbon dioxide emissions” says Elizabeth Yeaman.
