New milestones for the social work profession

MEDIA RELEASE / Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers
For immediate release, 22 September 2009

Social Workers Day – 23 September 2009
marks new milestones for the social work profession

In marking national Social Workers today (Wednesday 23 September) the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW) is also celebrating its 45th year as the professional body representing the voice of Social Workers.

“Since being founded in 1964 our Association has constantly been engaged in supporting our Members – without whom we wouldn’t exist - and promoting the ethical base to our profession and a consistently high level of standards for social work practice,” says Rose Henderson, ANZASW President.

“Social Workers Day is about taking the time to reflect both on our history, the present and the future, and the huge contribution that Social Workers make to communities throughout New Zealand every day”.

“It is an exciting time to be celebrating our sixth national Social Workers Day given that our membership numbers, now near to 4000 members, have never been higher, and given that this year we will be hosting the 20th Asia Pacific Social Work conference in Auckland in just seven weeks time”.

“This combined event of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) and the Asia Pacific Association for Social Work Education (APASWE) is the first international event of this scale to be hosted in New Zealand since 1995. We are excited by the programme for this conference which we have now finalised and that includes more than 90 presenters and speakers,” says Rose Henderson.

“Our Asia Pacific region is the largest in IFSW, spanning as it does the Middle East, across Asia through South East Asia, Australasia and the Pacific. Not including New Zealand delegates we are expecting Social Workers from 25 countries around the region to be in Auckland in November”.
