Close knit communities better for children says Industry Leader
Jenny Yule, the founder and managing director of PORSE In-Home Childcare and Educator Training has voiced her support for a new report calling for stronger community-based services to provide more opportunities for young children.
Ms Yule said the report was a step in the right direction to encourage families to stay connected with their children.
“It is positive to see the encouragement of community based childcare services that will reduce the number of hours young children need to spend in care outside of the home and back with carers who can support and understand the basic needs of each family.”
Entitled 'Strengthening Community-based Early Childhood Education in Aotearoa/New Zealand”, the report calls for programmes to empower families, that can focus on strengthening the relationships between parent and child.
The report also highlighted gaps in the quality provision of early childhood education within the community sector which was found to be unable to offer the capital required to expand.
Ms Yule said PORSE had already taken responsibility for planning a national network of services based on supporting the care-attachment relationship between children and their lead carers, with professional development programmes and activities within the community.
“The programmes incorporate children from every sector of society so disadvantaged children are not likely to miss out, Ms Yule said.
“PORSE offers a unique model of childcare that offers employment and career opportunities in home settings and links communities together without displacing young children.”
Ms Yule said In-home childcare offered a springboard for the co-ordination of other community support services and she would welcome the chance to assist in furthering development of early childhood initiatives within the community.
Ms Yule said that leaving babies for long hours in an out of home care arrangement that does not have links to the family is a “recipe for disaster”
“With the current childcare debate about what’s best for babies it is vital that we encourage childcare services and programmes that will strengthen the attachment relationship between babies and parents and/or carers,” Ms Yule said.
