Barnardos NZ Welcomes Report
“Barnardos New Zealand welcomes the report on the Crimes (Substituted Section 59) Amendment Act by the Ministry of Social Development released today”, says Murray Edridge, Chief Executive of Barnardos New Zealand.
“It comes as no surprise to us that there
is no increase in the number of parents and caregivers being
investigated or prosecuted for light or occasional smacking.
It shows the law is working well and as intended. Only
serious levels of violence and assault are being
prosecuted”.
“The outcome validates the
appropriateness and value of the law change to Section 59 of
the Crimes Act, and should serve to satisfy the concerns of
those seeking a reversal of the amendment. We also await
with some anticipation the outcome of the other review
currently in progress”, concludes Mr Edridge.
