Warming trend or cooling trend?

Warming trend or cooling trend?

The Kiwi Party
Press Release
14 January, 2010

“The headlines recently proclaimed the first decade of the 21st century to be the hottest ever,” said Kiwi Party Leader, Larry Baldock. "This is all supposedly consistent with global warming of course. As it turned out this headline was actually referring to NZ temperatures only and NIWA had to admit it was only hotter by a very small margin.

“What really matters in the global warming debate,” said Mr Baldock, “are the Global Average Temperatures (GAT). In England, around the time of the Copenhagen climate change summit, I saw a headline in the newspapers proclaiming, ‘2010 predicted to be the hottest ever.’ A rather rash prediction given that weather forecasters are never too good on their predictions, particularly in the UK where they were talking about a mild winter just prior to being hit by the coldest temperatures in 30 years!”

“I found myself asking the question, what about the GAT for 2009? Surely if that had been the hottest year yet, we would have heard the global warming alarmist shouting about it on every media outlet across the globe.

“It is true that the decade just ended was warmer than the decade of the 1990’s. That is why we still see ice melting etc. But closer analysis does not support a warming trend, in fact quite the opposite.

“2009 was not the hottest year on record, not even the second hottest. Lets try the fifth. The years that were hotter were 2002, 2003, 2004, & 2005. Cooler were 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007 & 2008. And 2009 was cooler than 1998, the hottest year of the 1990’s.

“It takes a bit of fiddling with figures to make a warming trend out of that data doesn’t it? More like a warm blip! Remember, the whole theory of man made global warming rests on the supposition that an increase in greenhouse gases, like CO2 and methane, are said to cause global warming. Since the peak GAT in 1998, CO2 emissions have increased significantly while the temperature has not increased at all but has cooled.

“Until someone explains that rather serious contradiction in the global warming theory the Kiwi Party will not be supporting any Emissions Trading Scheme and the ludicrous waste of our tax-payer money on CO2 reduction.
