Environment Commissioner urges party
leaders to support really smart meters
“I
am writing to all party leaders today seeking their support
for a member’s bill which is based on recommendations I
made in my report on smart meters, tabled in the House last
year”, said Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment
Dr Jan Wright.
The Commissioner was referring to
David Clendon, Green Party Member of Parliament , and his
Smart Meters (Consumer Choice) Bill which was drawn from the
ballot on Tuesday
“I urge party leaders to take
advantage of this excellent opportunity to debate this
extremely important issue. Supporting the bill to select
committee will allow MPs to question why consumers and the
environment are set to miss out on the benefits of really
smart technology.”
“With news today that
electricity companies are raising prices, it’s critical
that really smart meters are rolled out to help deliver
electricity savings to consumers”, said Dr Wright. “By
managing the demand for electricity better we will all be
better off, including our
environment”.
