Law commission report on Alcohol welcomed
“The Law Commission's report makes a comprehensive and compelling case for widespread change in our liquor laws”, said Kiwi Party leader Larry Baldock.
“The recommendations contained in the report give the National-led Government an opportunity to reverse so much of the harm caused by the legislation Parliament passed in 1999 when National was in government. The drinking age was lowered and supermarkets were permitted to sell alcohol, and ten years later we have a 9% increase per capita in alcohol consumption with all the related social and crime statistics.
"Dealing with the much needed changes and overdue reversal of a disastrous experiment with the nation's youth will be a defining moment in the career of the Minister of Justice Simon Power. It will take more than sincere words to resist the powerful lobbying of the liquor industry to do what is right for the future health of the social fabric of our nation.
"The changes needed will not be achieved by a simplistic approach such as raising the price", said Mr Baldock.
