Alcohol Harms Families

Alcohol Harms Families

The drinking problem in New Zealand will not be solved until we address aspects of our drinking culture says the Families Commission.

Recently ALAC launched the third instalment of its campaign to create an environment where friends have permission, and the tools, to discuss excessive drinking and its consequences.

“The recent debate about the effects of alcohol has increased attention on the laws that relate to supply and access,” says Chief Commissioner Bruce Pilbrow. “However, the current advertising campaign highlights the need for individual responsibility and an attitudinal change toward drinking.

“We believe that an integrated approach is necessary to reduce the harm that excess alcohol consumption causes.”

Reducing alcohol related harm can not be achieved by legislation alone, as evidenced by the concerted effort to reduce family violence which combines a public campaign and regulatory incentives.

“While there is a clear need for regulatory action, we cannot just look to the Government to find a magical cure by passing laws We need people to take some responsibility at community, family and individual levels; and in order for that to occur we must continue to educate.

“The Commission applauds the leadership shown by ALAC in providing a blueprint for discussing how to ease up on the drink. We hope that families take this message on board,” says Mr Pilbrow.
