Candidates Workshops for elections 2010
Candidates Workshops for elections 2010
Prospective candidates in this year's local government elections are invited to find out more about becoming a community board member, councillor or Mayor at workshops in Thames and Tairua on Saturday 3 July.
Participants will learn about the structure of Council, skills needed to be an elected member, time commitment, the impact of a public profile and more. Registration isn't required.
"This is an opportunity for people interested in standing in the 2010 elections to learn more about the nomination and election processes and the roles of councils and elected members. It's also a chance to have any questions answered," says TCDC Electoral Officer Lynlee Baily.
"Local government
is local democracy. This is fundamental to giving the
opportunity for everyone's voice to be heard. The mayor and
councillors take on a leadership role in Thames-Coromandel
representing the views of the community.
"We need a
range of people of different ages, ethnicities and
backgrounds to represent the diversity of our
community."
Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll. Nominations for candidates for the 29 positions available at Thames-Coromandel District Council open on 23 July 2010 and close on 20 August 2010. Voting papers will be sent out from 17 September 2010 and must be mailed to the council by Election Day, 9 October 2010.
Candidate Information Meetings will be held at
the TCDC Council Chamber, Thames: 10.30am Saturday 3 July
2010 and Tairua Library: 1.30pm Saturday 3 July 2010.
