Hutt City Mayor says work urgently needed on SH58

Hutt City Mayor David Ogden says the poor rating given to State Highway 58 in the newly released study of the safety of New Zealand’s state highways confirms his criticism the road is neglected.

“The Regional Transport Committee, lead by the regional council, has been ineffective for many years in supporting the work required to bring SH58 up to standard.

“It is hard to believe the National Transport Agency is proposing to instead give priority to building a new road from Grenada to Petone and improvements around the Basin Reserve.

“Tragically it seems further serious and fatal accidents must occur before SH58 is given the urgent attention it deserves,” says Mayor Ogden.
