C&R Waitemata Ward Team Opposes Parnell Bus
Park
The C&R Waitemata Ward Team strongly
opposes KiwiRail and Infratil’s plan to locate a
“bus-park” in the backstreets of historic
Parnell.
“We have listened to the concerns of the local community and agree that Parnell should see a visionary mixed-use development on this key local site,” said C&R Waitemata Ward team members and local residents Hinu te Hau, Simon Johnston and Stephen Goodman.
“The prospect of Parnell residents having to put up with 60 buses pushing their way through the narrow streets of Parnell is unacceptable,” said Ms te Hau.
KiwiRail and Infratil are planning to allow NZ Bus to park over 80 buses on land bordering Cheshire Street, Parnell and right next to the Domain. This move would see over 60 Link buses moving in and out of quiet residential streets every day.
“Residents and business of Parnell have told us that this bus park plan is not welcome and dramatically alters and undermines the Parnell Village atmosphere,” said Mr Johnston.
Backing this view was fellow C&R Waitemata Ward candidate Stephen Goodman who said that near on 1,000 signatures have been collected by Parnell residents opposed to KiwiRail’s plan.
“This company’s plan flies in the face of significant community interest in this historic site, and ignores the fact that Parnell’s back streets are in no way suited to significant volumes of buses day in and day out,” said Mr Goodman.
The C&R Waitemata Ward team believe that the site has the potential to be a wonderful asset for the future of Auckland and for Parnell. It would be short-sighted of KiwiRail to disregard to strong views and wishes of the people of Parnell.
