Mayor Ogden welcomes Auditor-General's findings

Mayor David Ogden has welcomed the Auditor-General's findings in relation to a complaint about Hutt City Council's practices for recovering money owed by commercial ratepayers. "The allegations made against the Council were baseless and designed to politically damage me ahead of the upcoming local body election," Mayor Ogden said. The Auditor-General has found the Council is appropriately dealing with debts owed by commercial ratepayers. Further, that Council is following set procedures, including the meeting of time frames for debt recovery, and that commercial ratepayer debt is under control and being monitored appropriately.

The Auditor-General also found there is no evidence to suggest favourable treatment of particular commercial ratepayers, and no evidence of delay or withholding of Council processes in respect of the recovery of any debts owing to the Council.

"The Council and I have acted professionally and appropriately at all times and the Auditor-General's findings reflect this," Mayor Ogden said.
