Regional Council too important to be a rest home

Regional Council too important to be a rest home

Labour Wellington Regional Council Candidate Daran Ponter today welcomed media attention on the Regional Council campaign.

"Greater Wellington Council is responsible for decisions that affect Wellingtonians every day. Yet Wellingtonians could be forgiven for not even knowing the Council was up for election later this month.”

"As The Wellingtonian pointed out today, the lack of scrutiny of the regional council means that name recognition dominates and it has
become a club for retired politicians from other levels of government. This is not what Wellington needs.”

“The current regional council has voted to increase bus fares. This is the opposite of what we need.”

“This current regional council Chairwoman is talking about contracting out to management of the water supply to a private company for up to 35 years. Wellingtonians didn’t vote for this”. “Wellingtons don’t want their water privatized.”

"We have councillors who don’t read their papers, who don’t engage with the issues and who fall asleep at council meetings",

“Wellington needs some fresh faces and new ideas on Greater Wellington Council,” said Daran Ponter. “I’m glad the local media is starting to take a close interest in the Council and hope this continues over the next four weeks”.
