Public invited to get involved in the Local Government Commission process
Aldo Miccio is calling on the public to make submissions to the Local Government Commission about the proposal for a union of Nelson city and Tasman District to the Local Government Commission.
The Local Government Commission has today announced it is seeking submissions to the proposal with a closing date of Monday 8 November.
Aldo Miccio was the initiator of the petition and the Commission has appointed him the Representative of Electors. Mr Miccio sought to have the Commission delay its consultation period until the New Year, however, the Commission has decided to continue with its original timeframe.
“Now that the Commission has finalised the dates for this first round of consultation, we have to respect their decision and get involved,” Miccio says. “Getting to phase two in the process – the drafting of a reorganisation scheme - is crucial to the region if we are going to get the proper debate this issue deserves.
“This process is all about democracy and enabling those who would be affected, ie. the regions’ residents, to have a chance to put their views across to an independent organisation,” he says. “Hearings will also be held in the future, but this first round of written submissions are extremely important.”
