National MPs should pay more attention
Alliance says National MPs should have paid more attention in school
The Alliance Party is supporting New Zealand’s teachers and has called on the Ministry of Education to return to the bargaining table with with an offer that will improve the learning conditions of New Zealand’s youth and not undermine teachers in their efforts to do their job.
Alliance leader Kay Murray says that she fully understands the PPTA’s outright rejection of the Ministry of Education's offer of 1.5% + 1%. She says it is appalling that teachers leave their classrooms and take to the streets to get their message across. “With inflation tipped to break 5% next year this is effectively a massive pay cut,” she says. “Teachers play an important role in preparing the youth of today for their futures and to offer them this, plus a string of claw backs is clearly inappropriate.” Ms Murray says other countries are upping their investment in public education, so Nationals’ decision to claw back as much as they can is ludicrous. "National MP’s really should have paid attention in school when teachers talked about getting what you pay for."
If in power the Alliance would address the PPTA’s concerns about class size by having a class size maximum of 20. Only the Alliance would be prepared to invest in the future of New Zealand by improving students learning conditions and address issued of recruitment, retention and reward.
