Craig Brown New NRC Chairman, Bain Deputy

Craig Brown has been elected as the Northland Regional Council’s new Chairman.

Councillor Brown, a Bream Bay resident, replaces Mark Farnsworth, who had led the Council for the past nine years, but was not re-elected to Council at this month’s local body elections.

Councillor John Bain, now serving his second term on the Regional Council, will serve as Council’s Deputy Chair.

Seven of the Council’s eight members – including newcomers Tony Davies-Colley, Bronwyn Hunt and Graeme Ramsey – were formally sworn in today (subs: Tues 26 October) at a ceremony at the Council’s Whangarei headquarters. The eighth member, Kaitaia-based Ian Walker, was unable to attend and is expected to be formally sworn in next month. (subs: November)

Among the first items of business for the new Council today was the election of a Chair and Deputy.

Councillor Brown faced competition for the Chairmanship from Cr Ramsey, but when the matter was put to a vote Cr Brown secured four of the seven available votes on the day. Upon his election, Cr Brown nominated Cr Bain as Deputy and Cr Bain was elected unopposed.

Craig Brown is the former Mayor of the Whangarei District Council and is serving his third term on the Regional Council. He is a former policeman and has been involved in farming and real estate.

Councillor Brown was on the Whangarei District Council for 12 years, six of them as Mayor, and is also on the Northland District Health Board. He has also been heavily involved on school boards of trustees since their instigation.
