Burma ‘s Elections, scheduled for November 07,2010, are designed to legalise Military Rule in Burma under the 2008 Constitution, which was written to create a permanent Military Dictatorship in our motherland, Burma.

After the Election, the Constitution will come into effect, a so-called Civilian Government will be formed by acting and retired Generals who all are under the Military commander-in-chief and the people of Burma will... legally become the subjects of the Military.

The National League for Democracy and Ethnic allies have refused to accept the regime’s constitution and have decided to Boycott the Elections. The Military Regime’s constitution and severely restricting election laws demonstrated to all of the oppositions the true intention the regime has for this election —
the legalisation and legitimisation of military rule in Burma..

We, the Democratic Burmese Community in Auckland cordially invite all the people who support Democracy and Human Rights for Burma to join the protest.

The elections scheduled for November 07, 2010, are designed to legalize military rule in Burma under the 2008 Constitution, which was written to create a permanent military dictatorship in our country.

After the election, the Constitution will come into effect, a so-called civilian Government will be formed, by acting and retired Generals, under the Military Commander-in-Chief and the people of Burma will legally become the subjects of the Military.

The elections should be exposed for what they are: a cruel charade. The Generals will simply swap their military uniforms for civilian clothes and it will be business as usual in Burma.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party and ethnic allies have refused to accept the military regime’s Constitution, and instead, boycotted the elections. The Constitution, the severely restrictive and discriminatory election laws and the ongoing imprisonment of political activists, journalists and members of the political opposition, highlight the true intention of the regime: the legalization and legitimization of military rule in Burma.

These elections fall far short of international standards for free, fair and credible elections. For the sake of the people of Burma, we hope the international community can see the regime’s true intentions and put pressure on the regime to stop this undemocratic process and stop all human rights violations in Burma.

The Democratic Burmese Community in New Zealand call on the international community:

- to denounce the sham elections

- to not recognize the 2010 election results

- to encourage meaningful, inclusive dialogue between the Military, the NLD and ethnic nationality representatives for the realization of national reconciliation in Burma.
