Sacked Pike River workers form Welfare Committee

The Pike River workers sacked this week have set up their own Welfare Committee after being told by receivers PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) that some of them will receive as little as ten days termination pay next week.

The Welfare Committee comprises five former Pike River miners who will distribute donated funds and food amongst the sacked workers' families.

The Committee will hold its first meeting at 10.30am tomorrow morning, Friday 17 December, at the EPMU office, 37 Mackey Street, Greymouth.

Kerry Bensemann from "0800 HUNGRY" is planning to bring over and donate a truck of food from Christchurch on Sunday 19 December.

The Committee will divide this up into food boxes and distribute them amongst the sacked miners' families.

Northern Southland Transport of Herbert Street, Greymouth, have opened their yard for the committee to use for their sorting work.

A local benevolent society has also offered to provide some financial assistance to financially stressed families.
