Response to illegal farm break-ins in Auckland
Statement by the Egg Producers Federation

Statement by Michael
Guthrie,
Chairman of the EPF,
In response to illegal
farm break-ins in Auckland
The proposal
released by Government is to phase-out current cages and
this is supported by the industry. It follows extensive
trialling of an alternative to current cages called colony
systems both in Europe and here in New Zealand, drawing on
international scientific and independent expertise. This
new system has been proven to be effective.
Colonies not only meet the requirements of the law, but they achieve what we would all regard as desirable - the opportunity for birds to indulge in natural behaviours such as nesting, scratching, perching and spreading their wings.
Eggs are nutritionally of very high value and represent excellent value for money at a time when the cost of staple foods is rapidly escalating and especially hurting low income families. 88% of eggs used in New Zealand are from cages because they are affordable. We want to make sure they remain affordable and colonies achieve that objective while also benefiting the birds.
The proposals released by Government involve enormous and costly change for egg farmers. An adequate transition time is required to make such extensive changes. The Government’s proposals are open for public consultation and we urge consumers and the public have their say on this matter.
