ASC Lets Women Down Over Abortion

WOMEN’S NATIONAL ABORTION ACTION CAMPAIGN (WONAAC)

'Women have been badly let down by the Abortion Supervisory Committee' said Di Cleary for the Women's National Abortion Action Campaign (WONAAC).

'It is disgraceful that we had to hear the news from an anti-abortion group that earlier and safer abortion will not be more widely available through a Family Planning clinic. After two years of apparently considering the matter at a snail's pace Right to Life has jeeringly announced that Family Planning has withdrawn its application to the Supervisory Committee to use the abortion pill at its Waikato Clinic'.

'The Committee should have told the public immediately as this withdrawal suggests the clinic could not comply with legal conditions. Instead the Committee gave the impression in its Annual Report it wanted earlier medical abortions to be more widely available. What on earth is going on?

'Last year's disquiet over a proposal to look at decriminalisation of abortion implied women would delay seeking abortion till 24 weeks. WONAAC asks for a vigorous response from the public and Parliament to this setback to early abortion. Women must make their own choice and optimum services must be freely available. This will only be achieved by decriminalisation of abortion. ‘
