To mine or not to mine. That is the question!!

To mine or not to mine. That is the question!!

The Kiwi Party
Press Release
March 9, 2011

"This is a question that should be put to all New Zealanders in a referendum" said Kiwi Party leader Larry Baldock. "I am urging the Prime Minister to reconsider the opening of a small percentage of the DOC estate to mining", continued the party leader.

"There is discussion around the mining of the huge iron ore deposits on the coast as well as the recently shelved plans to make use of the $100 billion in minerals stored in 0.7% of our DOC Estate. When the bill for the Christchurch rebuild is around $20 billion and climbing, it is surely time for the nation to have a sensible debate about whether we use our mineral wealth or keep it locked away as the Greens would desire.

"I do not believe the government should be held captive to a powerful lobby that can organise a march up Queen Street that does not necessarily represent the views of a majority of Kiwis. The only way to accurately determine the public will is through a referendum and the Kiwi Party is calling for one to be held at this year's election", concluded the party leader.
