Domestic Violence Remains High

Domestic Violence Remains High

'One third of people killed in New Zealand last year were killed by people within their families' says Heather Henare, chief executive of Women's Refuge.

Police statistics released today state that 25 of the 72 homicides in New Zealand are attributable to family violence. The report also shows that the majority of perpetrators of murders in New Zealand are men.

Police report 65,000 family violence related calls over the report's period, and express concern that around 80 percent of all family violence goes unreported.

'While much has been done to encourage people to report family violence, it is clear that much more needs to be done and that momentum can not be lost' said Ms Henare.

'While we are disappointed and very concerned to see that about half of all serious assaults in New Zealand are family violence related, we are
encouraged to see an improvement in overall crime rates. The Police should be congratulated on their ongoing work to improve their procedures that make family violence easier to report' Ms Henare said.
