News Release – Republic of New Zealand Party

For immediate release

Southern Cross for ANZACS

Republic of New Zealand Party leader, Kerry Bevin, is looking forward to the celebration of ANZAC Day, remembrance of the glorious dead and honouring our soldiers in Afghanistan who are protecting human rights and religious tolerance.

“However, it is now appropriate to acknowledge that our soldiers battle for the citizens of New Zealand and their families, not the Queen of England, her Governor General or the British Empire.”

We no longer fight for Queen Victoria, he said

“Despite our heritage, a break with tradition is necessary for New Zealanders to affirm our new identity in noble causes.”

“When another ANZAC shows outstanding valour, or dedication wouldn’t it be wonderful if this courageous person was awarded the Southern Cross, a symbol of Pacific significance, a symbol of real kiwi pride, presented by a child on behalf of the citizens of Aotearoa?”

Mr Bevin is hoping he will hear speeches about the dedication of Kiwis in Timor, the Solomons, Afghanistan and those in earthquake relief in Christchurch this Easter.

“The second World War was a long time ago. I acknowledge that this was a desperate fight for freedom from Fascism but it’s time to move on,” he said.

“Civil Defence is an obvious priority right now.”

Mr Bevin said The Republic of New Zealand Party will institute New Zealand honours

“We will also increase defence spending to incorporate skills training for unemployed youth.”
