ALCP support Australasian hemp food proposals

Food Standards Australia New Zealand Re: Application Paper A1039 – Low THC Hemp as food

ALCP support Australasian hemp food proposals

We the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party welcome moves to utilize the many health benefits of highly nutritious hemp seed.

The ALCP support the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) application to allow Hemp as food. We believe it is the way forward for the future as a sustainable food source, as there is increasing pressure put on fish stocks and land for high maintenance polluting farming.

This industry supports and fits into the triple bottom line required today for development of economy viability, environmental sustainability and positive social outcomes. The viability is shown by the fast growing capacity of hemp, enabling a high yield of product per hectare. It is a superior clean, sustainable resource for now and the future.

We believe that through the passage of time the concerns for people confusing the difference between hemp seed as food and cannabis use for recreational purposes, has been shown to be unfounded. This is demonstrated by the fact that hemp seed oil, sold in New Zealand and food sold in other countries, is not abused, by recreational users.

Most cannabis consumers know that there is no THC in the seed. It is frowned upon to have seed in one’s cannabis for recreational purposes. If cannabis has gone to seed, it is generally regarded as weaker and less desirable for recreational purposes. The cannabis consumer has become more sophisticated in their tastes for quality. Cannabis seeds are not desirable as they add weight and cannot be smoked!

We agree clear labeling for all foods is necessary.

Thank you for this opportunity.

We are happy to engage in further discussions or answer any questions.
